As airlines continue to raise fees for checking baggage, passengers are turning to shipping services.

PRACTICAL TRAVELER

Earlier this year Continental, Delta, United and American began charging $25 for a first checked bag and $35 for the second on domestic flights — an increase of about $5.

That costs more than some shipping services, according to Airfarewatchdog.com, an airfare deals site, which created a handy chart comparing the cost of shipping versus checking luggage. Shipping a 25-pound bag from Chicago to Orlando by FedEx Ground, for example, is $17.40. By contrast, checking the bag with Delta would cost $23 online and $25 at the airport. Shipping an oversize bag can save even more. Sending a 55-pound bag on the same route via Fedex Ground is $33.52, compared with $113 to $115 on Delta.

Shipping, of course, requires planning– as much as four to five days ahead if you want to get the best rates. But “you’ll enjoy better shipment tracking than the airlines can offer, plus better security,” says Airfarewatchdog. “And, of course, you can breeze through the airport without waiting in ever-increasing lines to check in your bags with the airlines.”
